The island of Samui is a picturesque, tropical destination for an unforgettable holiday escape. Samui retained an essential air of tropical ease and natural charm despite the fact that it is now a well-known, upmarket holiday destination.
Samui is a small island, covering an area of only 250 square
kilometers, yet it is Thailand's third largest island after Phuket and
Koh Chang. It is located
in the warm waters of the Gulf of Thailand, about 500 kilometers south
of Bangkok. Its coastlines are defined by long stretches of sand and
quiet rocky
coves. The interior is covered with dense jungle on the slopes of
rugged hills up to 600 meters high.
In 1986 Bangkok Airways commenced direct flights from Bangkok to Koh
Samui opening the island to many holiday makers and starting a rush of
tourism infrastructure development.
The originative Koh Samui Airport was built and is owned by Bangkok
Airways and provides a surprise welcome. Its thatched arrival pavilions
are all open to the flowering gardens. And like in a theme park
travelers are transferred from and to the aircraft by colorful little
trains of open carts.
The weather on Koh Samui is pleasantly warm all year round with
temperatures around 30 degrees C and up to 40 degrees C during the
months of April and May. Water temperatures are almost constant at 27
degrees C, which lends the name "Asia's Bathtub" to the Gulf of
Thailand.
Accommodations on the island are found at more than 200 hotels, or
more exclusively, in selected private holiday villas. Many travelers
prefer the privacy and independence of these holiday villas, which are
luxuriously equipped and fully serviced.
It is not surprising that Samui is a popular retreat for spa
treatments. The fantastic natural setting is the perfect location for
pampering, relaxing, and rejuvenating the body and mind. In recent
years health and beauty spas have sprung up everywhere around the
island, and several will be found within walking distance from your
hotel or holiday villa.
